Budou odkazem této generace v paměti města pouze obchodní centra a komplexy kancelářských budov?
Initiator: Alberto Di Stefano Curator: Milan Mikuláštík
The impulse for the exhibition came with the initiative "For New Prague"
that involved an open letter to the mayor of Prague calling for the change
of established practices connected with the "development" of the city.
The exhibition is our contribution
to this initiative.
Recently there has been a strong impulse
from the architects at the Academy,
which the exhibition is supposed to introduce
to a larger audience
that should be interested in this issue.
What's the reason for the changes?
20 years ago, people were excited
about political changes
but now they're getting more and more upset.
They start to feel
like they've been cheated.
They thought they were building democracy
but ended up in a country ruled by the mafia
where ordinary people mean nothing.
Their surroundings are used for the profit
of certain people
connected with dishonest politicians.
But there's still a chance to stop
some of the upcoming projects.
What I find very important
is the PRAGUEWATCH initiative.
It's a project that has a website
presenting a map of Prague
that shows developer projects
criticized by the locals or the experts.
It's an open database
inviting the residents to call attention
to controversial projects
that might be planned in their neighborhood.
The address is Praguewatch.cz.
We chose most of the exhibiting artists
in advance.
We didn't manage to make all the artists
create new works especially for this event,
but so it goes.
We couldn't force them to do it,
and especially not on such short notice,
as the exhibition was quite spontaneous.
I don't know if it's obvious
but there was a lot of improvisation involved.
Of course, it's impossible
to sum up all the architectural problems
of Prague in such a short time
so we tried to express the issue
in general terms.
That's why the exhibition
may seem fragmented.
Among the participants are not only architects
but also graffiti artists and others
so there are many different approaches.
I think I have too little information
to be able to recognize the stregths
of the exhibition.
I think it's great to involve people
of various specializations like architects
and conservationists.
The event at the gallery is complemented
by a busy program.
The only problem is the improvised character
of the event, and the organizers
are fully aware of it.
But I really like the whole idea.
It's possible that only like-minded people
will come to see the exhibition
but maybe it's going to appear in the media.
It's another step toward civil society.
I've only just got here
but I like the atmosphere
of architects meeting other artists
because I think that the exhibited artworks
may be easier to understand
for the general public
than the complicated explanations
given by architects.
