The Georg Baselitz retrospective captures all of the phases from the artist’s career to define Baselitz’s individual style, which, since the 1960’s, has been characterized by the distinctive use of non-traditional painting techniques and a provocative selection of motifs.
In spite of all experimentation, Baselitz’s style remains true to the objective illustration of reality. None of this is changed by the fact that since 1969, the painter has been showing his motifs, figures and objects, standing upside down.
The method of inverted depiction was incidentally the most important step in Baselitz’s creation. Through this method, he makes our vision unsure, and he also provokes a questioning of the idea of a visual space built in perspective.
The concept of Georg Baselitz´s exhibition
is very easy.
It is a cross-section of his work
from 1960 to 2008.
What is important and needs to be reminded
is that the total number of his paintings
painted during this period, is 1800.
We have here 56 paintings.
It is a very sharp cut through his creation.
The exhibition concentrates mainly on his paintings.
It does not include his drawings that are 9000, and
sculptures because of technical reasons.
However, this exhibition is the first presentation of his work in the Czech Republic.
Georg Baselitz at the time of coming abstract painting and informel,
unusually went back to the German neoexpressionist work of the 20´s and 30´s.
It was a noncomformist step
that was understood as a step backwards.
However, he´s defended traditional German
expressionist painting and painting as such.
He´s showed that painting has its place and masters.
He doesn´t work with themes.
He is a bit like a butterfly.
The painting itself is very important.
The content although present and often provocative
does not represent the most important thing.
Georg Baselitz does not tell us stories,
but shortcuts of his ideas that have figurative shape.
His paintings mainly deal with the painting as such.
I think it is unnecessary to say the reason
why he puts his paintings upturned.

Tak jsem bojovali za člověka, ktery nám nakonec nechce vysvětli proč jsou obrazy Georga Baselitze vzhůru nohama.
Tak alespon to Rudolfinum je vzhůru nohama? potešilo mě!
