The collaborative archiving project Transitland was realized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It presents a selection of 100 single-channel video works, produced in the period between 1989 and 2009.
The works reflect the transformations in post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe. The selection was made by an international jury from 350 videos, proposed by 40 nominators of curators, art critics and artists.
The project focuses on an extensive and turbulent time and space span. Once called the Eastern bloc without further specification, the territories of Transitland were conceived as the somewhat homogeneous, dark side of Europe behind the Iron Curtain.
The Transitland project was initiated
by the InterSpace center in Sofia
and the Ludwig Museum in Budapest.
The curators entrusted
with choosing the works for this video archive
were supposed to find artists
who worked with the theme
of political changes after 1989.
The period covered by the project
is since 1989 until 2009.
The project includes about 100 videos.
The exhibition has only been shown once,
at the Ludwig Museum.
It is intended as a series
of traveling projection shows.
I decided to select the videos
presented today at the Space Gallery
in Bratislava by myself.
The absence of local authors
in this exhibition
shows the lack of activism in Slovakia,
maybe even more noticeable
than in the Czech Republic.
The political and social themes
attracted less Slovak artists
than artists from other countries.
There are many authors from ex-Yugoslavia
but also from Bulgaria or Armenia,
whereas the curators picking videos
for the Transitland project
chose almost no authors from Slovakia,
with the exception of Eva Filová.
The whole project began
as an online video archive,
so you can find most of the videos
at www.transitland.eu
where you can play them in low resolution
and read related texts.
The project can be seen as a contribution
to the theme of last year's anniversary
of 20 years since the revolutions
in Eastern and Central Europe.
