- Oh, this way, right?00:00:00.828
- 00:00:00.828
- Hello.00:00:06.694

- EJA DEVEČKOVÁ VIDEO COLLECTION00:00:09.194
- 00:00:09.194
- Will you hold it for me?00:00:15.054
- 00:00:15.054
- My favorite medium is video.00:00:20.364
- 00:00:20.364
- I use it to express my opinions on the themes I deal with.00:00:26.100
- 00:00:26.100
- Apart from videos, I also make installations00:00:32.677
- 00:00:32.677
- that interact with the viewers00:00:39.332
- 00:00:39.332
- and make them participate in the artwork.00:00:42.832
- 00:00:42.832
- One of my main themes is the role of art00:00:47.373
- 00:00:47.373
- in contemporary society,00:00:51.873
- 00:00:51.873
- the way art is perceived not only by experts,00:00:55.373
- 00:00:55.373
- but also by the general public.00:01:00.873
- 00:01:00.873
- In addition, I like working with language.00:01:08.054
- 00:01:08.054
- Through these themes,00:01:13.880
- 00:01:13.880
- I try to create my own definition of the meaning of art.00:01:16.880
- 00:01:16.880
- The video "A Chat About a Potential Concept"00:01:22.380
- 00:01:22.380
- was shot in 2007.00:01:27.136
- 00:01:27.136
- I asked several Slovak curators, artists and art teachers00:01:30.341
- 00:01:30.341
- to say a certain phrase in front of the camera.00:01:36.514
- 00:01:36.514
- I recorded several phrases00:01:41.236
- 00:01:41.236
- but this was the one I finally chose.00:01:44.736
- 00:01:44.736
- The phrase is "A chat about a potential concept".00:01:49.236
- 00:01:49.236
- The video is a set of portraits of people who work with art,00:01:53.987
- 00:01:53.987
- repeating the same phrase.00:01:59.634
- 00:01:59.634
- Some of them focus on it, others are more distracted.00:02:02.720
- 00:02:02.720
- "A chat about a conceptual poten... wait, no.00:02:08.244
- 00:02:08.244
- A chat about a conceptual concept.00:02:12.330
- 00:02:12.330
- A chat about a potentional... potential concept."00:02:18.032
- 00:02:18.032
- The video "Gestures"00:02:22.567
- 00:02:22.567
- deals with another theme I find interesting.00:02:26.349
- 00:02:26.349
- In sign language,00:02:32.247
- 00:02:32.247
- there are very few signs denoting art as such.00:02:35.747
- 00:02:35.747
- It only has some basic signs for painting or a brush.00:02:41.104
- 00:02:41.104
- That's why I created a list of frequent terms00:02:46.956
- 00:02:46.956
- relating to contemporary art.00:02:52.456
- 00:02:52.456
- I collaborated with an interpreter00:02:56.026
- 00:02:56.026
- and two young deaf people.00:03:00.482
- 00:03:00.482
- I explained the terms to them and they translated them for me.00:03:04.013
- 00:03:04.013
- Based on all this, I developed some new gestures.00:03:10.353
- 00:03:10.353
- The video tutorial focuses on the correct behavior00:03:16.026
- 00:03:16.026
- in a gallery for all gallery goers.00:03:21.136
- 00:03:21.136
- It comprises several points. Now let's get us started.00:03:25.253
- 00:03:25.253
- It's a short instruction video about the basic situations00:03:31.593
- 00:03:31.593
- one can encounter in a gallery.00:03:37.812
- 00:03:37.812
- Of course there is a slight educational meaning,00:03:45.183
- 00:03:45.183
- but also a mild criticism of the idea of a perfect viewer.00:03:52.950
- 00:03:52.950
- Are we, the artists, perfect viewers?00:03:59.014
- 00:03:59.014
- The video "Viewers" is another collection00:04:05.459
- 00:04:05.459
- of portraits of artists and curators I met in Leipzig.00:04:10.459
- 00:04:10.459
- I asked them to explain their behavior in galleries,00:04:16.551
- 00:04:16.551
- the way they try to understand an artwork.00:04:22.906
- 00:04:22.906
- I also asked them to give some advice00:04:27.773
- 00:04:27.773
- on how to perceive an artwork.00:04:32.355
- 00:04:32.355
- In fact, I put them in the role of gallery viewers.00:04:36.303
- 00:04:36.303
- They were not artists talking about their own works00:04:42.286
- 00:04:42.286
- but regular gallery goers00:04:48.286
- 00:04:48.286
- talking about the way they look at others' works.00:04:52.148
- 00:04:52.148
- Where can I find...00:04:57.094
- 00:04:57.094
- ...a good gallery?00:05:02.804
- 00:05:02.804
- The last video was also created during my residence in Leipzig.00:05:06.336
- 00:05:06.336
- I tried to teach one Slovak sentence to foreign artists:00:05:12.608
- 00:05:12.608
- "Where can I find a good gallery with contemporary art?"00:05:17.808
- 00:05:17.808
- The video reflects the question whether we have00:05:23.685
- 00:05:23.685
- a quality modern art institution in Slovakia.00:05:29.185
