Nové Slovensko (SNG – Esterházyho palác )
Nové Slovensko (ťažký) zrod moderného životného štýlu 1918–1949
Výstava v skratke predstavuje prienik modernej civilizácie do života slovenskej spoločnosti v poprevratovom období. Predstavuje fotografické kolekcie Jaromíra Funkeho, Miloša Dohnányho, Karla Plicku spolu s dielami vrcholnej avantgardy Ľudovíta Fullu, Mikuláša Galandu a tiež úžitkového umenia.
- New Slovakia00:00:10.120
- 00:00:10.120
- We are now at the exhibition00:00:17.360
- 00:00:17.360
- "New Slovakia: (Difficult) Birth of the Modern Lifestyle".00:00:20.840
- 00:00:20.840
- The term New Slovakia00:00:26.560
- 00:00:26.560
- was used quite frequently at the time,00:00:29.560
- 00:00:29.560
- such as in the name of the magazine00:00:33.800
- 00:00:33.800
- that was published during World War II.00:00:38.360
- 00:00:38.360
- This propaganda magazine00:00:43.040
- 00:00:43.040
- totally discredited the term.00:00:46.560
- 00:00:46.560
- Despite this fact,00:00:50.400
- 00:00:50.400
- we kept the title New Slovakia00:00:53.400
- 00:00:53.400
- because it expresses the importance of newness00:00:56.920
- 00:00:56.920
- at that time.00:01:01.400
- 00:01:01.400
- This is not yet another exhibition00:01:04.080
- 00:01:04.080
- of Slovak modernism.00:01:08.080
- 00:01:08.080
- Our goal is rather to present00:01:12.000
- 00:01:12.000
- the modern lifestyle in Slovakia and its birth,00:01:15.960
- 00:01:15.960
- its development, the prejudice it faced,00:01:20.400
- 00:01:20.400
- the way it is reflected in art.00:01:24.960
- 00:01:24.960
- The exhibition covers all kinds of visual arts,00:01:28.600
- 00:01:28.600
- including applied arts, graphic design00:01:33.520
- 00:01:33.520
- or film.00:01:37.720
- 00:01:37.720
- It also includes everyday objects00:01:40.821
- 00:01:40.821
- connected with the modern lifestyle00:01:44.321
- 00:01:44.321
- that often have a timeless design.00:01:48.337
- 00:01:48.337
- I'd like to point out00:02:08.340
- 00:02:08.340
- that well known authors00:02:11.340
- 00:02:11.340
- are presented here through their less known works,00:02:14.944
- 00:02:14.944
- such as Benka and Bazovský00:02:20.189
- 00:02:20.189
- who focused on Slovak traditional life.00:02:23.689
- 00:02:23.689
- Many of the authors are completely unknown.00:02:28.136
- 00:02:28.136
- We don't mean to change00:02:32.579
- 00:02:32.579
- the history of Slovak art or photography,00:02:35.579
- 00:02:35.579
- rather to complete it.00:02:39.579
- 00:02:39.579
- The largest part of the exhibition00:02:42.616
- 00:02:42.616
- consists of photographs.00:02:46.116
- 00:02:46.116
- We felt that photography00:02:49.467
- 00:02:49.467
- expressed modernism better than visual arts.00:02:52.967
- 00:02:52.967
- We don't put too much emphasis on facts.00:02:58.627
- 00:02:58.627
- But we respected the limits of the period00:03:02.653
- 00:03:02.653
- from 1918, when the Slovak Republic was created,00:03:06.532
- 00:03:06.532
- to 1948 or 1949,00:03:12.502
- 00:03:12.502
- when modernism was replaced by socialist realism.00:03:15.502
- 00:03:15.502
- The themes cover various areas of life.00:03:27.245
- 00:03:27.245
- They have a logical arrangement.00:03:33.528
- 00:03:33.528
- The first theme is about the modern elements00:03:36.925
- 00:03:36.925
- penetrating into the traditional life,00:03:40.800
- 00:03:40.800
- intact landscape of Slovak mountains,00:03:44.944
- 00:03:44.944
- or places that still belonged to the 19th century00:03:48.514
- 00:03:48.514
- by their urbanist and architectural character.00:03:55.286
- 00:03:55.286
- Little by little the traditional visual world00:03:59.664
- 00:03:59.664
- was overlaid by elements of modern life,00:04:03.729
- 00:04:03.729
- such as new means of transport, electrification,00:04:07.509
- 00:04:07.509
- technical and geometric objects,00:04:12.126
- 00:04:12.126
- completely different00:04:15.721
- 00:04:15.721
- from the old clay or wooden constructions.00:04:18.721
- 00:04:18.721
- Another theme concerns people00:04:55.481
- 00:04:55.481
- and the way they used to work.00:04:59.331
- 00:04:59.331
- The exhibits also reflect social contrasts.00:05:05.524
- 00:05:05.524
- On the one hand, there is the joyful life00:05:10.734
- 00:05:10.734
- of the emerging middle class,00:05:15.626
- 00:05:15.626
- with the mass development of tourism, sports,00:05:19.126
- 00:05:19.126
- fashion, and ways to spend leisure time,00:05:23.737
- 00:05:23.737
- which was something new.00:05:29.413
- 00:05:29.413
- On the other hand,00:05:34.712
- 00:05:34.712
- some works depict life on the social periphery,00:05:38.913
- 00:05:38.913
- which we only discover today.00:05:44.678
- 00:05:44.678
- To sum up what I have said,00:05:49.141
- 00:05:49.141
- the birth of the modern lifestyle00:05:53.676
- 00:05:53.676
- was the beginning of what we live in today,00:05:57.176
- 00:05:57.176
- with all the positive and negative aspects.00:06:01.676
- 00:06:01.676
- Of course, we wear modern clothes00:06:05.769
- 00:06:05.769
- and use modern media00:06:09.269
- 00:06:09.269
- but the basic environment is quite similar.00:06:12.269
- 00:06:12.269
- And I think that the visitors understand that.00:06:16.421
- 00:06:16.421
- They feel connected with the works,00:06:21.177
- 00:06:21.177
- although they belong to the past.00:06:24.677
