The exhibition of Svätopluk Mikyta (*1973) and Johannes Schlichting (*1968) Ad libitum reflects their long-term teamwork since their academic studies in Stuttgart, resulting both in common works and exhibitions (for example their probably most impressive project Dies natalis in the State Gallery in Banská Bystrica in 2004).Ad libitum is “gesamtkunstwerk” composed of their drawings from the time of their studies and also music made directly for the visual material at the exhibition. Their solo drawings are installed in an interesting and unexpected context with respect to radically different home environs both authors come from. There is a silent picture projected on the galery wall or an installation from old furniture evoking bourgeois interiors. Ad libitum, a latin for „to one’s own taste“ or „to one’s fill“ offers a complex experience, not only visual (as we are used to at countless exhibitions of contemporary art) but also „atmospheric“ with music and space for free association and contemplation.

Svätopluk Mikyta
Between 1993 and 1999 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. He studied for a year at the Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart. After graduation he worked at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. At present he heads the studio of Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. Mikyta creates theme cyclical drawings, objects, graphics and so-called re-drawings of old photographs and graphic prints. He perceives the continuity of his work through a classic visual gene pool of the country he comes from. He is one of the most significant representatives of contemporary art platform in Slovakia.

Johannes Schlichting
He studied at the Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart between 1993–1998. He deals with drawing but also with composing original music. His artworld, like that of Svätopluk Mikyta, is in a good way „marked“ by his own memory and archaeology of scenes from visual, musical and pop culture, nation, origin and a surreal children’s world that represents the base for his work. Schlichting is an interesting representative of contemporary art in Germany whose work contributes to a discourse on aesthetics in art.
