The Italian artist resident in Austria Esther Stocker (*1974) is well-known at home and abroad for her original site-specific installations. Her work is primarily based on visual play and optical illusion which break the borders of architectural interiors. Visitors to her exhibitions are astounded especially by the monumental scale and unforgettable physical experience they get inside the transformed space. Faith in sensory experience is shattered in favour of the activation of human imagination and fixing one´s attention to a different, virtual reality. A geometrically divided space denying all rules of perspective and spacial perception will be created also in the hall of the Roudnlice Gallery.
The project is meant as a dialogue between the artist´s original work and the unique interior of the vaulted Baroque riding school. The painter, photorapher and video artist Esther Stocker comes from Italy, she was born in 1974 in Silandro in southern Tyrol. In 1994 she studied at the Academie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, in 1996 in Milan at Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and in 1999 in the USA at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She has exhibited her work since 1997. In her installations, wall painting, photographs and video art she uses minimalist vocabulary of black, white and grey geometrical forms. At present the artist lives in Vienna and her work has achieved success in many leading galleries of contemporary art all over the world (e.g. in the Viennese KUNSTHALLE and MUMOK, CCNOA in Brussels, Künstlerhaus in Hannover, MACRO Roma Courtesy OREDARIA Arti Contemporanee in Rome, in many galleries of contemporary art in London, etc.). In 2004 she was awarded the prestigeous Austrian prize of Otto Maurer.
