Artyčok Recommends

The Gallery Entrance was opened in May 2005 at the entrance of the just founded Karlin Studios – hence its name. Its foundation was initiated by two young artists – Tereza Severová and Tereza Velíková – and it ranks among the new independent galleries opened in the first decade of the 21st century. Later on the two artists were joined by Barbora Zachovalová. The three artists say they regard themselves more as authors of the gallery´s dramaturgy than curators cooperating on the exhibition conception.

The program of the gallery should focus – the same as the program of similar galleries e.g. Gallery am180, etc, 35 m2 – primarily on students of art schools and recent graduates, but also on young artists and artists of any age as long as they have “a young mind”. Among the names of artists in the archive of exhibitions we can also find names of contemporary art school teachers (Milena Dopitová, Martin Zet, Jiří Kovanda, Vajd&Alt, Marcus Huemer, Dominik Lang, Jan Haubelt, Václav Stratil etc.). Every year at least ten exhibitions are held at the Entrance gallery as well as projects by mostly young curators such as Markéta Kubačáková, Marika Kupková, Pavlína Morganová, Tereza Stejskalová, Edith Jeřábková and others. The choices are made by the gallery owners but during the last three years also by open calls. A special format of presentations are the so-called Entrance Talks, self-presentations of exhibiting artists (e.g. Václav Magid, Lenka Vítková, Anežka Hošková, Dan Vlček and others), who present their work and talk about specific works of art. This format is primarily designed for people who do not belong to the narrow art community but it has also proved useful as a mediator between artists, curators and theoreticians. After eight years in the Karlin Studios the gallery became independent and in December 2012 it moved to the left wing of the Orangerie of Břevnov monastery which had been reconstructed by M1architects located in the opposite wing. The Gallery Entrance has thus gained an original space and the gallery owners hope that this is another step towards further professionalization of the gallery which has already won an important place on the Czech art scene.
