Seniors! Out of the Circle
Final exhibition “Seniors! Out of the Circle“ is the result of one year´s cooperation of the artist Ľudmila Horňáková, seniors from Košice and seniors of the group Letokruhy (The Annual Ring). The exhibition reflects their cooperation with younger generation represented by the secondary school students, it disturbs the stereotypes about both generation groups and interconnects new media with traditional ones. The seniors together with the artist made an exhibition of relationships, new media, sound and video in the form of a FLAT into which individual results and works of art are sensitively implemented. The results presented on the exhibition Out of the Circle refers to small steps, which the seniors have taken to get through the everyday routine to the life supporting communication and relationships with community and public space.
- Furcianske Tvorivé Letokruhy (Creative Rings)00:00:00.000
- 00:00:00.000
- A small group has been created and united in a short time.00:00:02.855
- 00:00:02.855
- Headed by Ludka and Marianka creative ideas have become true in our group.00:00:08.836
- 00:00:08.836
- So our logo has been made - the results of our work we present on vernissage,00:00:18.375
- 00:00:18.375
- and so we are gaining publicity. We are developing intergenerational00:00:26.727
- 00:00:26.727
- relationships with students in Furca, looking forward to cooperation .00:00:31.556
- 00:00:31.556
- We presented our annual work on vernissage opened 13th November00:00:36.807
- 00:00:36.807
- in new space in Furca. In this manner we would like to raise public awareness00:00:42.519
- 00:00:42.519
- of our work to let them know that we work on intergenerational relationships00:00:54.072
- 00:00:54.072
- between seniors and young people.00:00:59.711
- 00:00:59.711
- My name is Ludmila Hornáková, I studied New Media in Bratislava,00:01:02.955
- 00:01:02.955
- for a year and half I´ve been working on community art project which00:01:11.833
- 00:01:11.833
- deals with interpersonal relationships across generations and00:01:20.102
- 00:01:20.102
- from the perspective of senior people and how are they perceived by others.00:01:25.566
- 00:01:25.566
- There are four types of works of art dealing with inner life of seniors,00:01:34.187
- 00:01:34.187
- then there is direct communication and action with the younger generation00:01:45.187
- 00:01:45.187
- in the forms of exploration in society. Next there are some actions00:01:54.428
- 00:01:54.428
- that I do directly in the public space aimed at exploring people´s view00:02:03.764
- 00:02:03.764
- on the other generation. It enables people to express - they can express00:02:11.230
- 00:02:11.230
- indirectly what they would never say.00:02:20.556
- 00:02:20.556
- So it goes this way: hallway, kitchen, bedroom, clothes closet, living room00:02:27.514
- 00:02:27.514
- and public space which is not outside as it´s too cold. In the hallway00:02:32.300
- 00:02:32.300
- there is an action Bellboy, a luggage porter, in which I was dressed up00:02:41.591
- 00:02:41.591
- as a porter approaching people on the street in order to take their bag,00:02:47.118
- 00:02:47.118
- take out the dog or other things. They were willing to trust me and00:02:52.190
- 00:02:52.190
- and share the moment until we came to their door. Another action00:03:00.469
- 00:03:00.469
- is slippers party, I asked the students of secondary art school whether00:03:05.192
- 00:03:05.192
- they want to participate in this action. They built up communication00:03:12.915
- 00:03:12.915
- with seniors through animation which was in form of slippers.00:03:21.269
- 00:03:21.269
- Another action I participated in was about how to write a text message,00:03:28.416
- 00:03:28.416
- so I came up with an idea that I forgot my glasses and I urgently needed00:03:35.943
- 00:03:35.943
- to send a text message. So I addressed young men and women -00:03:44.058
- 00:03:44.058
- they were helpful, but it also happened that one young man asked me00:03:53.904
- 00:03:53.904
- for an euro to buy cigarettes after helping me. I cannot say that00:04:00.370
- 00:04:00.370
- young people are unwilling to help older people. But it really depends on00:04:08.579
- 00:04:08.579
- how do seniors treat youngsters.00:04:17.534
- 00:04:17.534
- In the kitchen or dining room there is the sound record and photographs00:04:21.034
- 00:04:21.034
- which deal with an ordinary object - a mug seniors were supposed to bring00:04:31.425
- 00:04:31.425
- to the party. Everyone was asked to say something about the mug00:04:39.830
- 00:04:39.830
- and why did they choose this particular mug. It was aimed at relationships00:04:46.210
- 00:04:46.210
- in the family. I randomly found out that most of the cups and mugs00:04:52.237
- 00:04:52.237
- are related to their grandchildren, it was a nice surprise to me.00:04:59.968
- 00:04:59.968
- Then there is clothes closet in which we were collecting information for00:05:07.505
- 00:05:07.505
- the journal The Rings, it dealt with fashion as it was interesting for seniors,00:05:12.316
- 00:05:12.316
- they wanted to know how do youngsters respond to it. So we dressed up00:05:17.561
- 00:05:17.561
- some were willing to wear a wig or something strange, some were casual.00:05:22.702
- 00:05:22.702
- I wanted the seniors to include part of themselves into the flat and00:05:46.060
- 00:05:46.060
- part of objects from their household, e.g. for the bedroom I considered00:05:52.603
- 00:05:52.603
- one woman started to live in Furca with boxboard instead of furniture.00:05:55.332
- 00:05:55.332
- So we used boxboard, everyone brought an object for the bed to make it00:06:02.636
- 00:06:02.636
- compact and I took a detailed picture of a flat to interconnect it and00:06:09.839
- 00:06:09.839
- to make them feel present in the room and find a part of themselves in.00:06:16.938
- 00:06:16.938
- There are also some funny remarks regarding personal life, from an ironic perspective.00:06:24.451
- 00:06:24.451
- Im very glad as I enjoyed much of that here and Im happy for this perspective.00:06:30.166
- 00:06:30.166
- In this room there is a workroom with all the records from actions, trips,00:06:37.812
- 00:06:37.812
- and exhibitions. Here are the maps of the flats and rooms with lamps00:06:47.376
- 00:06:47.376
- made by seniors called In the Light of Home, reflecting the relationships00:07:00.203
- 00:07:00.203
- so they were choosing photographs changed into the lamps representing00:07:07.478
- 00:07:07.478
- the light of their life.00:07:14.830
- 00:07:14.830
- The photographs on the lamp come from my family and I was saying00:07:17.105
- 00:07:17.105
- that the young generation we are working with substitutes our far away00:07:24.098
- 00:07:24.098
- grandchildren, because my three granddaughters are in England.00:07:32.240
- 00:07:32.240
- They gave me a T-shirt with a picture "We love you" , so it is also about00:07:34.996
- 00:07:34.996
- situation in our family, not only among the others and that is important.00:07:46.110
- 00:07:46.110
- Then there is a collection called In Every Household. For two months00:07:55.138
- 00:07:55.138
- I was searching for senior people using their creativity in everyday life,00:07:59.505
- 00:07:59.505
- or they bring working activities home or they are collectors of particular things,00:08:06.680
- 00:08:06.680
- e.g. non material collections, simple or flicking collections, different kinds00:08:16.160
- 00:08:16.160
- of atypical things one wouldn´t expect in the household or creativity00:08:25.197
- 00:08:25.197
- and aesthetic work which one wouldn´t expect in daily life neither.00:08:30.473
- 00:08:30.473
- There is Furciancke haiku on this side, which is short poetry inserted into00:08:35.441
- 00:08:35.441
- the public journal section Purchase - Sale, among these adverts we put00:08:46.684
- 00:08:46.684
- short poems containing remarks about daily life issues, social feedback and00:08:56.567
- 00:08:56.567
- social conditions and other topics.00:09:03.288
- 00:09:03.288
- At the back there are three projects, one is ballon installation00:09:09.858
- 00:09:09.858
- called I breathe for You - it was about our fast-moving times and the goal00:09:19.252
- 00:09:19.252
- was to make people stop in time, we were blowing balloons up and00:09:24.091
- 00:09:24.091
- children and adults were stopping and coming by as we addressed them.00:09:33.034
- 00:09:33.034
- It is needed to say that this project is supported by Spots in media,00:09:38.707
- 00:09:38.707
- and it is funded by Ministry of Culture.00:09:48.944
