JCHA 2014 – 555 – Lift
The third finalist, Tereza Velíková, introduced her project entitled Lift on the Imperial Furnicular during the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The Lift is an audiovisual play with time and space and the number of acts depends on the number of times the visitors are willing to také the furnicular. Individual fragments of the story acquire new contexts in the steep tunnel.
- For the event in Karlovy Vary I wanted to create an event00:01:15.106
- 00:01:15.106
- that would be light-hearted,00:01:19.614
- 00:01:19.614
- because I had a feeling that in the time of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival00:01:23.912
- 00:01:23.912
- there wouldn't be a mood for something more serious.00:01:28.142
- 00:01:28.142
- I have chosen funicular, because, if not for anything else,00:01:32.675
- 00:01:32.675
- I had found it to be bizarre enough a place in order to make there happen something.00:01:38.428
- 00:01:38.428
- It's basically a short tunnel between the lower city centre and the Hotel Imperial00:01:42.640
- 00:01:42.640
- with the funicular traversing it in a minute and I have created there an audio-installation00:01:46.910
- 00:01:46.910
- that accompanied the visitors in the funicular that was riding very slowly00:01:51.177
- 00:01:51.177
- and thus traversing the tunnel in four minutes,00:01:55.462
- 00:01:55.462
- that is, the length of the song "Lucky Key" by Marie Rottrová.00:01:59.836
- 00:01:59.836
- She sings this song in a duet with Jiří Bartoška,00:02:07.786
- 00:02:07.786
- who is actually not singing but reciting.00:02:11.997
- 00:02:11.997
- "It's good that you called in the morning. I..."00:02:19.284
- 00:02:19.284
- "I was beside myself, when you said you are here."00:02:23.613
- 00:02:23.613
- "I didn't forget you."00:02:29.983
- 00:02:29.983
- And I have cut this song in two parts,00:02:33.915
- 00:02:33.915
- so, in order to enjoy the experience fully, one had to use the funicular twice.00:02:38.094
- 00:02:38.094
- Upwards we went with Jiří Bartoška downwards we listened to Marie Rottrová.00:02:42.246
- 00:02:42.246
- It was kind of a rendezvous in funicular,00:02:47.629
- 00:02:47.629
- because also the opposing carriage was outfitted with the song.00:02:52.033
- 00:02:52.033
- "The sun rises right now, you can keep on sleeping."00:02:58.157
- 00:02:58.157
- "The day welcomes me there, where you like it so much."00:03:05.420
- 00:03:05.420
- "I ride through city, where you know every stone."00:03:12.567
- 00:03:12.567
- "Hopefully, you remember like I do."00:03:19.917
- 00:03:19.917
- I wanted to make the showcase of sources of inspiration very simple:00:03:25.223
- 00:03:25.223
- I took things I've known for a long time, which had really inspired me,00:03:33.567
- 00:03:33.567
- and I tried - by way of interleaving - to juxtapose them with my own work.00:03:37.922
- 00:03:37.922
- On behalf of the video editing, I've shown the work of Martin Arnold,00:03:47.556
- 00:03:47.556
- whom I have discovered already at university00:03:51.724
- 00:03:51.724
- while working on my Master's thesis. Then there is Francis Alys.00:03:56.072
- 00:03:56.072
- I've got there Tracey Moffatt.00:04:04.171
- 00:04:04.171
- I've chosen the video that shows the unbearability of waiting and idleness as its main theme.00:04:08.453
- 00:04:08.453
- And then I have there Josef Dabernig00:04:14.306
- 00:04:14.306
- with quite a famous movie 'Wisla' and then there are editions of two films,00:04:18.776
- 00:04:18.776
- one of them is Buffalo '66 and other one is Tristram Shandy.00:04:23.885
