No comment? vol. 4
No Comment? Vol. 4 exhibition presents already the 4th re-installation of the No Comment? project. Every one of its installment starts from a different set of approaches to the topic at hand and shifts the project further, creating thus a looped reinterpretative communication model. No Comment? Vol. 4 extends the project with Facebook comments, an archive of the previous project installments and a guest exhibition Enter, please! curated by Lucia Miklošková. A comment is to be understood here as an artwork of the rational type, that allows its author to explain, judge, deconstruct and assume an attitude (a few of the comment types: critical, chatty, institutional and artistic, etc.). This intends to bring a member of the audience to reflect upon these statements and, eventually, adopt them, or, vice versa, confront them.
- This is the 4th re-installation of the No Comment? project. The first three took place in Brno.00:00:15.077
- 00:00:15.077
- Now we have made the fourth one here in Stredoslovenská galéria in Banská Bystrica.00:00:21.439
- 00:00:21.439
- The project focuses on a so called "short moment" that arises in gallery between an artwork00:00:26.979
- 00:00:26.979
- and a member of audience.00:00:36.144
- 00:00:36.144
- And we were trying to draw the member of audience in. Not like a passive figure, but like an active one.00:00:38.044
- 00:00:38.044
- Although, even the passive one suits us.00:00:43.445
- 00:00:43.445
- For example, the common denominator of the four shows are notebooks for the visitors' comments.00:00:51.107
- 00:00:51.107
- In the end, these books are not just a marginal addition to the show, but become a fully-fledged artwork00:01:05.653
- 00:01:05.653
- and a part of the exhibition.00:01:13.251
- 00:01:13.251
- Therefore, it may seem like a show by thirty artists, but our biggest "hopes" lie in a member of audience00:01:17.151
- 00:01:17.151
- freely reinterpreting the artworks and writing his ideas and positions down,00:01:21.952
- 00:01:21.952
- so that the author may later read them.00:01:29.053
- 00:01:29.053
- In Banská Bystrica we have created an archive on the ground floor of the gallery00:01:36.258
- 00:01:36.258
- that represents the sum of the previous three installments of the show,00:01:39.631
- 00:01:39.631
- so the exhibiting artists are "deposited" here and every author has his own folder.00:01:43.943
- 00:01:43.943
- On the 1st floor, where we are right now, the newly added projects can be found.00:01:50.601
- 00:01:50.601
- We asked for a collaboration Oldřich Morys, who created the exhibition's architecture,00:01:54.902
- 00:01:54.902
- no doubt a very distinctive element of the show.00:02:00.335
- 00:02:00.335
- Morys is a very flexible artist, who isn't just doing architecture00:02:04.521
- 00:02:04.521
- for other people's shows, but he also has his own artworks.00:02:09.495
- 00:02:09.495
- Having graduated at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno in Mr. Ambrůz sculpture studio allows him00:02:15.114
- 00:02:15.114
- to come to a space and find a way to work with it.00:02:20.851
- 00:02:20.851
- So the architecture of the exhibition is site-specific for the given space.00:02:28.411
- 00:02:28.411
- ... and then we came to an agreement, that it would be interesting to invite00:02:44.511
- 00:02:44.511
- another curator and show her exhibition and, similarly, address a member of the audience00:02:50.089
- 00:02:50.089
- or a reaction among authors or between an author and a member of the audience.00:02:55.999
- 00:02:55.999
- The show bears title Enter, please! It had its premiere last year in the Turiec gallery in Martin.00:03:07.008
- 00:03:07.008
- This is its repetition. The show focuses on artworks, which thematize the art world,00:03:12.087
- 00:03:12.087
- a term coined by Arthur Danto, who perceives the art world as a network of cultural,00:03:17.932
- 00:03:17.932
- social and political relations. The exhibition has focused on artworks made in the "noughties",00:03:24.242
- 00:03:24.242
- that is between year 2000 and now.00:03:31.364
- 00:03:31.364
- There are many different approaches here. One can find here various participatory forms,00:03:34.731
- 00:03:34.731
- political forms, more serious and also very critical approaches, or, at times,00:03:43.015
- 00:03:43.015
- playful, humorous and ironic forms.00:03:49.831
- 00:03:49.831
- Therefore, while avoiding the use of fixed categories, I decided to point at this heterogeneity00:03:52.310
- 00:03:52.310
- with a decisive factor of linkup of the show to the exploration of the intertextuality phenomenon.00:03:55.686
- 00:03:55.686
- That means artworks referring to specific members, or, let's say, agents of the art world.00:04:02.690
- 00:04:02.690
- For example, there is an artwork by Veronika Šramatyová entitled "Barter Collection", in which she came up00:04:10.803
- 00:04:10.803
- 00:04:10.803
- with a "detour" in the process of acquiring artworks using barter exchange.00:04:17.677
- 00:04:17.677
- In exchange for the artwork she made a portrait of and for the author.00:04:21.671
- 00:04:21.671
- She presents this work as an artwork, that is she appropriates an artwork by a different author.00:04:25.192
- 00:04:25.192
- These approaches present a kind of self-reflexivity of art, as if the art itself was setting up its own mirror.00:04:35.430
- 00:04:35.430
- Hopefully, you'll come to your own opinion.00:04:54.227
