Wallpaper at Winkler
Erika is an authentic painter; decorative in the best possible meaning of the word. She lays stress on the ornament, large format and layering of colours. The idea of the show shall focus on a position in contrast with architecture that relates to the person of Oskar Winkler, one of the most important Slovak functionalist architects of the 20th century whose close ties to Lučenec are both personal and work-related. These two authors are associated by the fact that Erika’s father studied at Industrial High School of Building in Lučenec directly under the supervision of Oskar Winkler whose name the school bears today. Their relationship went over and above the usual relationship between a teacher and a student and they became friends. This heritage, the memory of strict modern architecture and its laws stand in opposition to paintings which can thus create a perfect productive tension at the exhibition.
- I would like to present now sort of a genealogy of the exhibition.00:00:10.766
- 00:00:10.766
- It consists probably of my subjective interpretation00:00:14.915
- 00:00:14.915
- in a form of a story.00:00:18.990
- 00:00:18.990
- When Erika, David and I met00:00:25.673
- 00:00:25.673
- probably a month ago in Bratislava00:00:29.877
- 00:00:29.877
- and we told her we want to organise her exhibition in Priestor00:00:34.286
- 00:00:34.286
- we had no idea that what's related to her work00:00:42.855
- 00:00:42.855
- and that she would come to Lučenec00:00:47.045
- 00:00:47.045
- is the fact that Erika's father had studied here.00:00:51.244
- 00:00:51.244
- The association of my work00:00:55.369
- 00:00:55.369
- with the title of the show00:00:59.641
- 00:00:59.641
- comes from the fact00:01:03.896
- 00:01:03.896
- that my father studied here in Lučenec under the supervision of Oskar Winkler00:01:08.048
- 00:01:08.048
- at the Industrial High School of Building.00:01:12.476
- 00:01:12.476
- What he gained there00:01:16.638
- 00:01:16.638
- was the anti pole of the decorative pattern and the functionalism00:01:20.725
- 00:01:20.725
- as imposed by Oskar Winkler on his students00:01:24.891
- 00:01:24.891
- meaning also my father.00:01:29.038
- 00:01:29.038
- Also, my father knew him personally;00:01:32.536
- 00:01:32.536
- that's why I had a chance to hear even personal stories00:01:36.792
- 00:01:36.792
- about their relationship and that's what fascinates me00:01:40.745
- 00:01:40.745
- and what makes it interesting for both of us.00:01:44.921
- 00:01:44.921
- Today, I visited also the villa built by Oskar Winkler00:01:53.844
- 00:01:53.844
- and where my father had used to live.00:02:00.142
- 00:02:00.142
- I envy him those times, that he had the chance to live00:02:04.411
- 00:02:04.411
- in such a beautiful functionalist house00:02:08.339
- 00:02:08.339
- and that he had had immediate ties with the architect00:02:12.565
- 00:02:12.565
- and the architecture he had been studying.00:02:16.726
- 00:02:16.726
- I was a very direct influence.00:02:20.712
- 00:02:20.712
- A wallpaper is a pattern I remember from my childhood.00:02:24.807
- 00:02:24.807
- Specifically, I have been working with paint rollers00:02:28.926
- 00:02:28.926
- that had been used in the house where I grew up.00:02:32.742
- 00:02:32.742
- What ties all of the images, essentially, is the dcor.00:02:39.919
- 00:02:39.919
- Juraj and I were trying to install them in such a way00:02:43.908
- 00:02:43.908
- that it works as a single wallpaper.00:02:48.020
- 00:02:48.020
- The technique combines oil and acryl.00:02:55.285
- 00:02:55.285
- The basic layer is an oil colour00:02:59.331
- 00:02:59.331
- which determined the motif00:03:03.764
- 00:03:03.764
- and on top of that00:03:07.804
- 00:03:07.804
- there was an acryl paint applied briskly.00:03:11.892
- 00:03:11.892
- And by the virtue of oil not mixing with water00:03:15.928
- 00:03:15.928
- it created a sort of 'map surface' as a top layer.00:03:19.999
- 00:03:19.999
- Since I was using a beamer00:03:24.182
- 00:03:24.182
- it was sort of a mechanical job;00:03:28.231
- 00:03:28.231
- I didn't have to mix colours, create shades00:03:32.608
- 00:03:32.608
- or care about the plasticity. It wasn't important to me at all.00:03:36.835
- 00:03:36.835
- It was simply a filling up of a space in the shape of canvas.00:03:40.987
