Last year’s Jindřich Chalupecký Award winner returns to her school years in her largest solo exhibition to date. With a schoolbag on her back, Koťátková set out for school for several months, taking in her feelings and the feelings of children as they walked. In hundreds of drawings, she recorded what she remembered from her school years. She then combined her memories of school with her perspective today, and analyzed how society shapes the world of children. “I wanted to return to the school where I spent nine years of my life. I wanted to make a documentary about the school building, about daily events, everyday school rituals, the bustle in the school corridors, and the personalities of the pupils and teachers.” Koťátková uses drawings, objects, performances, and video to create a kind of walk-through model of everything we learn at school.
