The title of this exhibition says it all, Being There. Just who or what does ‘being there’ refer to? And more importantly, where is ‘there’? Is it here? Or elsewhere? And when is there? Did it already happen? Is it happening now? Or has it yet to happen?
So then, this is an exhibition about absence, about missing it, about not being there. It is meant to function like a conceptual non-site in which works gesture, in one way or another, away from themselves, to another time or another place.
Partially steeped in a romantic ethos of elsewhere, in its antiquated possibilities, this exhibition also inevitably considers just how démodé such a concept is, but not without proposing a kind of alternative.
