ONE STEP FORWARD
The project ONE STEP FORWARD displays the work of eight artists, all of whom are students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. At first sight, the combination of artists may seem like an impossible selection, although the choice is not random.
Each artist may use a different approach to their work; they are however combined by their consideration of art and the world as one.
- The concept is simple - eight 5th year students,00:00:00.000
- 00:00:00.000
- from different studios, who all study together.00:00:04.544
- 00:00:04.544
- Although each of them is different, they had a common desire00:00:08.239
- 00:00:08.239
- to step outside their artistic routines and to create something new.00:00:13.144
- 00:00:13.144
- For me this was an important step forward00:00:22.366
- 00:00:22.366
- when it comes to the colours, definitely, as for three years00:00:26.199
- 00:00:26.199
- I had only been using with blue.00:00:30.847
- 00:00:30.847
- At the beginning of the exhibition I had the idea of making00:00:33.696
- 00:00:33.696
- the last blue painting, but during the process00:00:37.112
- 00:00:37.112
- I realized the need to step away, from the picture, literally,00:00:39.592
- 00:00:39.592
- but also from the colour scheme - new colour, new technique.00:00:44.882
- 00:00:44.882
- I played around with some sacred form but00:00:55.656
- 00:00:55.656
- at the same time the contents is very animalistic.00:00:59.433
- 00:00:59.433
- I wanted some ambivalence. Another level is visual, it is very wild,00:01:03.250
- 00:01:03.250
- eye-catching, perhaps. I attempt, as in my previous works,00:01:07.707
- 00:01:07.707
- to create visual traps that grab the attention at the first sight.00:01:13.393
- 00:01:13.393
- For me, the step forward was mainly the opportunity to00:01:22.179
- 00:01:22.179
- express myself freely, especially in this installation.00:01:26.812
- 00:01:26.812
- For me it is a style I have used before,00:01:30.251
- 00:01:30.251
- doing similar things in the past, especially these mutants.00:01:33.212
- 00:01:33.212
- It is the other work that is different, the one that steps out,00:01:39.156
- 00:01:39.156
- and for me, this is the important thing, doing something new.00:01:45.004
- 00:01:45.004
- I did these drawings two years back. They are my chiíldhood reminescences,00:01:59.309
- 00:01:59.309
- things I forgot and then remembered in the process of automated drawing.00:02:05.916
- 00:02:05.916
- I try to enhance them by including a story.00:02:14.983
- 00:02:14.983
- In this work I also reacted to the space I have been given within the gallery.00:02:19.488
- 00:02:19.488
- This project is entitled One Step Aside.00:02:28.048
- 00:02:28.048
- It was created especially for this space and for this exhibition.00:02:31.049
- 00:02:31.049
- It features paintings that are more spatial00:02:37.056
- 00:02:37.056
- because they are white boxes with the canvases stretched on a frame.00:02:41.015
- 00:02:41.015
- The name suggests that I was not yet ready to step forward and into00:02:53.864
- 00:02:53.864
- a new, unfamiliar medium, so I decided to side-step it by taking one step aside.00:03:00.812
- 00:03:00.812
- The main difference from my previous works is in size -00:03:06.041
- 00:03:06.041
- this is the largest work I have ever painted.00:03:09.690
- 00:03:09.690
- It is also my first when it comes to objects.00:03:13.691
- 00:03:13.691
- They come out of the actual painting and it is a reaction to street tags.00:03:17.930
- 00:03:17.930
- I placed the little girl is in this vacant space. She has only some blow-up mattress.00:03:27.132
- 00:03:27.132
- I am interested in the moment of decision, of the possible, or rather impossible, action,00:03:35.379
- 00:03:35.379
- when the person, the character, has to decide.00:03:44.182
- 00:03:44.182
- Those antique statues communicate with her. It can refer to something that had00:03:48.912
- 00:03:48.912
- taken place but we are unaware of.00:03:53.846
- 00:03:53.846
- The main step forward for me was the experiment,00:03:57.831
- 00:03:57.831
- the whole work was an experiment.00:04:01.840
- 00:04:01.840
- I tend to do things of autobiographical nature00:04:03.841
- 00:04:03.841
- but this one has a more religious orientation,00:04:07.023
- 00:04:07.023
- more existentially serious. The whole time I was00:04:11.202
- 00:04:11.202
- I was experimenting with the material, the printing I had used,00:04:16.122
- 00:04:16.122
- so it was also an experiment for the printing companies00:04:20.832
- 00:04:20.832
- and for the team that helped me, so the whole thing, up to the installation,00:04:24.933
- 00:04:24.933
- it was all an experiment.00:04:30.217
