The exhibition Rauchen Verboten! Fire! looks at the subject of tobacco and cigarettes in the work of artists from varying generations and circles. Cigarettes became inseparable from modern day culture in the mid 19th Century and has been a motif for the artists ever since.
Unlike many motifs the cigarette has the ability to talk about the same subject from often opposite perspectives. They can submit subtle femininity, next to masochistic masculinity. They are smoked by artists and intellectuals and workers and soldiers alike.
The cigarette has a different part to play in each of the works in the show and at a time when smoking is being removed from public space and iconography, it is important to value the richness they can bring whilst we still can!
