UNHEIMLICHE
Unheimliche is a frightening unknown, the underside of the familiar. The trio of Czech artists Eva Koťátková, Josef Bolf and Richard Wiesner certainly manage to provoke the ‘unheimliche’ for their audience in this show curated by Zuzana Stefková.
- The theme "umheimliche" has appeared in my work.00:00:13.606
- 00:00:13.606
- The term was coined by Freud.00:00:16.502
- 00:00:16.502
- It refers to something that is familiar but a bit different or estranged.00:00:18.791
- 00:00:18.791
- The estragement of something so close may effect us alarmingly.00:00:27.875
- 00:00:27.875
- More or less intuitively, on the basis of these three strong personal preferences00:00:34.398
- 00:00:34.398
- the conception originated that later evolved step by step.00:00:38.723
- 00:00:38.723
- What you can see here it is a result that00:00:43.357
- 00:00:43.357
- over against the Freud´s term00:00:45.133
- 00:00:45.133
- it goes back to the roots, to the home and to its absence,00:00:46.879
- 00:00:46.879
- or, on the contrary, to the things that make home comfortable and pleasant.00:00:51.143
- 00:00:51.143
- On the one hand there are things that characterize the home as a trap00:01:01.785
- 00:01:01.785
- from which there is no escape. As a punishment or straitjacket.00:01:06.482
- 00:01:06.482
- This is present in Eva Koťátková´s drawings called "Domestic Prison".00:01:10.366
- 00:01:10.366
- Next to them, there are pictures with architectonic elements00:01:15.142
- 00:01:15.142
- which are by Josef Bolf, who works with the element of worrisome waiting.00:01:19.949
- 00:01:19.949
- Something is happening but we don´t know what00:01:26.000
- 00:01:26.000
- because the rooms are almost empty,00:01:29.805
- 00:01:29.805
- only sometimes there is a head, or a piece of trunk or a broken window,00:01:31.995
- 00:01:31.995
- making it appear very terrifying,00:01:36.870
- 00:01:36.870
- more so than if there were some bloody scenes.00:01:40.385
- 00:01:40.385
- In case of Richard, his collection of found things00:01:44.250
- 00:01:44.250
- has extended by a dumbell found in a derelict lodging house, and a shopping list.00:01:48.164
- 00:01:48.164
- A found shopping list written by a stranger.00:02:09.050
- 00:02:09.050
- We used it and did the shopping according to the list.00:02:13.647
- 00:02:13.647
- It is very interesting because it is very homeless.00:02:20.630
- 00:02:20.630
- It connects to the video by Eva Koťátková00:02:25.738
- 00:02:25.738
- called "Pile, Exercise, or Controlled Memory Loss".00:02:30.608
- 00:02:30.608
- You can see there a group of people00:02:38.178
- 00:02:38.178
- who move around an old bunker made of old pieces of furniture.00:02:40.415
- 00:02:40.415
- There are very intimate motifs,00:02:45.692
- 00:02:45.692
- however there are also motifs that thematize the space,00:02:48.303
- 00:02:48.303
- on the margin of the public and the intimate.00:02:52.669
- 00:02:52.669
- This may be perceived as the least alarming.00:02:56.693
- 00:02:56.693
- I think we managed to find common points,00:03:01.469
- 00:03:01.469
- all the works meet on several levels.00:03:06.063
- 00:03:06.063
- It may not be perceived as so alarming,00:03:11.414
- 00:03:11.414
- but in all of them there is some oddity.00:03:14.621
- 00:03:14.621
- And that´s what I wanted the most.00:03:16.569
