Guys and Girls Who Don’t Mind
This group show at Galerie Sam 83 in Česká Bříza brings together both male and female artists working with the theme of sewing, textiles and embroidery. The work ranges from more traditional takes on the theme, to video projections and photography.
The show aims to provoke a discussion about the use of the ‘thread’ in art, as well as inevitably speaking of the inherent meaning of textiles for the contemporary artist.

- 00:00:02.072
- - So there is the luxury of time in that the embroidery lasts...00:00:16.110
- 00:00:16.110
- - That too. I don't know. When I embroider, it is so00:00:23.253
- 00:00:23.253
- on the borderline of being art that when I invest my time in it00:00:28.519
- 00:00:28.519
- it's a trip, because it is so borderline.00:00:33.848
- 00:00:33.848
- Welcome to the exhibition "Boys and girls who don't mind".00:01:11.447
- 00:01:11.447
- They are represented here by Jan Karpíšek, Viktor Takáč,00:01:16.920
- 00:01:16.920
- Veronika Dolanská, and Sam.00:01:21.993
- 00:01:21.993
- Also there is Daniela Mikulášková, and Milada Hynková, who are00:01:25.154
- 00:01:25.154
- unable to be here today.00:01:29.937
- 00:01:29.937
- With this exhibition we are opening a discussion on the00:01:32.895
- 00:01:32.895
- topic of "Embroidery in visual expression and its figurative meanings in works00:01:36.225
- 00:01:36.225
- of contemporary artists.00:01:40.593
- 00:01:40.593
- - Did you have any issues with the fact that this exhibition00:01:52.834
- 00:01:52.834
- is focused on embroidery? - No.00:01:56.385
- 00:01:56.385
- - And what do you think about it now?00:01:59.834
- 00:01:59.834
- - Now I think this is a great space and a great project.00:02:03.786
- 00:02:03.786
- This whole building. And that I am slightly outside,00:02:09.954
- 00:02:09.954
- like Viktor, being little further away from00:02:14.772
- 00:02:14.772
- the core of the concept. But as I understand it,00:02:19.083
- 00:02:19.083
- we still belong here. So it's fine.00:02:23.995
- 00:02:23.995
- - I was thinking I enjoy this theme because I like re-contextualization00:02:32.444
- 00:02:32.444
- of video in different forms. So I thought of this as a challenge,00:02:36.454
- 00:02:36.454
- which one of the videos could bear the closest likeness00:02:41.276
- 00:02:41.276
- to the embroidery, and I have chosen this older work00:02:46.271
- 00:02:46.271
- which seemed to me most representative at the moment00:02:50.869
- 00:02:50.869
- of the film language, or video art language.00:02:55.190
- 00:02:55.190
- The motif of repetition and of layering.00:03:11.341
- 00:03:11.341
- I used to say that in my paintings I always show00:03:16.911
- 00:03:16.911
- to other people the most important things I have experienced in my life.00:03:22.366
- 00:03:22.366
- Some spiritual path, or some concrete discovery or state00:03:27.401
- 00:03:27.401
- that seems to me most important, most significant.00:03:32.800
- 00:03:32.800
- It keeps being this way, I guess it cannot be otherwise.00:03:41.105
- 00:03:41.105
- Nowadays I try to do ordinary things, with no added abstractions00:03:48.234
- 00:03:48.234
- or unnecessary spiritual concepts.00:03:52.836
- 00:03:52.836
- Just, simply, drawing monkeys.00:03:58.163
- 00:03:58.163
- So we went to visit Milada as part of the residence from00:06:03.280
- 00:06:03.280
- the gallery Sam 83. She showed us there00:06:08.856
- 00:06:08.856
- how she makes it, something I didn't know.00:06:13.144
- 00:06:13.144
- I couldnt't have imagined the way it was made.00:06:21.530
- 00:06:21.530
- We had the chance to try it right there and I was00:06:28.810
- 00:06:28.810
- the only one who did, and that piece up there is the result.00:06:33.946
- 00:06:33.946
- There was some guy here just before telling me how much it annoys him00:07:55.002
- 00:07:55.002
- the way those little girls are used in it.00:07:59.609
- 00:07:59.609
- It's good that it annoys him but, on the other hand,00:08:04.092
- 00:08:04.092
- when I deal with something that I refer to as social, or touching00:08:08.931
- 00:08:08.931
- upon social themes, I think that I know what I'm doing,00:08:13.728
- 00:08:13.728
- given my age, and, most of all, those are my children.00:08:19.030
- 00:08:19.030
- Using a child like: go somewhere, film those poor kids, show it publically,00:08:23.548
- 00:08:23.548
- effect those children's lives, then, in another 20 years, dust it off,00:08:27.823
- 00:08:27.823
- show it again, again effect those lives... you know, I couldn't do that.00:08:32.725
- 00:08:32.725
- I wouldn't point my camera at Nikola if I hadn't lived my whole life with her,00:08:41.060
- 00:08:41.060
- and she is, of course, here with us today,00:08:48.390
- 00:08:48.390
- and the responsibility of working with somebody who,00:08:53.518
- 00:08:53.518
- at the time, isn't exactly problem-free, like Nikola back then,00:08:58.031
- 00:08:58.031
- or now, for that matter, then it's not the best,00:09:02.902
- 00:09:02.902
- in my opinion, to approach it like: let's do a little movie, a photo,00:09:07.413
- 00:09:07.413
- thinking we're not responsible for what it does to that person00:09:11.696
- 00:09:11.696
- later on in life. And I think we are.00:09:16.384
- 00:09:16.384
- So in that film I have used people I have known for a long time00:09:20.909
- 00:09:20.909
- and I wouldn't dare to edit it differently.00:09:25.240
