Real-time Documentary Embroidery is embroidery created without any former sketches or planning. The technique imposes its own inherent restrictions, making the creation of a true representation of reality a challenge to the artist.
The slowness of constructing a line, one stitch at a time, forces an economisation and abstraction of the image. Often this leads to an encryption process, resulting in the creation of symbolic graphics where detail and decoration are considered excess.
Working in groups, on the street, this new breed of embroiderer finds themselves face to face with their subjects. Under the scrutiny of the passer-by, a new balance between subject and documenter is created, a bi-directionality where the observer is also observed.
