In the series Pictures of the Land, Jan Kekeli is playing with the boundary between photography and painting. He is freely inspired by the aesthetics of landscape-painting from the beginning of the 19th century; especially he is a great admirer of Caspar David Friedrich´s work. His camera with a negative of 4 x 5 inches (102 x 127 mm) enables him to spot fascinating wild forest corners, meandering paths, melancholic panorama in a great detail – accompanied by a lyrical colourfulness, soft light or silent dignity. A man in his photos has a similar function as in romantic pictures – he is only a secondary character which can either complete the action or underline the majesty of landscape sceneries.
