PRIMITIVUS

Such emblems stand for Agnieszka Szostek´s vision, even though she translates the Latin meaning of Primitivus into Pop.

The shape, emerging as violence in “Clockwork Orange”, still offers resistance when it remains as autonomous as the art of the Modern. Such shapes are never limited by a frame separating a picture from the world it represents. In one of Agnieszka Szostek’s works the frame is a mirror, which holds a picture as thin as an appearance. On the whole, these pictures are partly painted by hand in a way that this
is also perceptible. But such manually painted work has no priority over a mechanical application of colour or over using materials like metal, plastic or wood. This all together forms one appearance. Alois Riegl has called such an appearance “outline and colour in plain or space”. It is neither painting nor sculpture, it is just as pictorial as sculptural. And, together with such work, the room in which it appears comes to light.
