The name Pérák was derived from a general word for a spring and the suffix -ák, often used to form an informal name. The name was motivated by his significant feature, i.e. the springs- steal springs on his feet that helped this cartoon character overcome the most difficult of obstacles. Traces of the legendary phantom, who first appeared in 1946, have been apparent in the Czech visual culture for more than seventy years. We can therefore observe how a certain character was at first formed by the need to deal with traumatic occupation experience, later by a political order and currently by independent authors’ desire to revive the mystical figure as a truly Czech Superman with a peculiar name…

The lecture by the internationally known Ukrainian artist Nikita Kadan at the Academy of Fine Arts was introduced and accompanied by a debate with the Russianist and semiotician Tomáš Glanc. Kadan lives and works in Kiev. He works with various media, including installation, sculpture, painting and collage.
