Ethnography is a social science that studies and describes patterns of behavior, social organization, customs, music, and art in individual human cultures and societies. During the Soviet era, the folklore and national traditions of individual countries were suppressed by socialist ideology. It is therefore no surprise that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, individual nations began to revive their traditions and customs. A new patriotism and national identity emerged, along with respect for their own traditions and folklore. Unfortunately, however, these traditions are currently in decline again. Not because of oppression by foreign powers, but because of contemporary society. However, selected artists do not forget about traditions. Jolanta Kyzikaité works with contemporary material in the context of folk tradition. On the contrary, the duo Mitríková and Demjanovič use traditional folk techniques in combination with motifs from national history. This creates a kind of harmony between tradition and modernity.
