Not Necessarily So

Paul Kuimet and Laura Toots’s exhibition will open on the 13th of December at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery’s Müürivahe space. The artists find a point of collusion in their desire to examine home as an institution. While Toots has been predominantly dealing with her family and close ones in her work, Kuimet has been focused on describing housing as a sociopolitical process. In this exhibition these perspectives—one coming from the inside and the other looking at the outside—meet in an arrangement that proposes a luring shift. Toots’s video “Howevermuch” reveals the usually neglected moments of family life, their seeming irrelevance making them that much more intimate. The video faces Kuimet’s installation that employs photography and conceptual approaches in order to create a situation where an object changes perspective, its own as well as the viewers’. Here, the interior becomes exterior, while unnoticed becomes significant.
