INTERVIEW WITH ANDY WARHOL ABOUT HIS EXHIBITION IN THE GALLERY-DRUGSTORE OFF-PRICE PRODUCTS IN BRNO

A fictional interview with Andy Warhol about his exhibition in the Gallery Drugstore Off-price Products in Brno was made probably in 1987 – the year of the artist's death.

The reporter was dubbed by Petr Oslzlý, Andy Warhol by Rostislav Pospíšil and the third voice could not be identified. The shop with off-price drugstore products used to be in Bayerova street in Brno between 1986 and 1989 and it also served as an independent exhibition place. Its conception was created by Petr Oslzlý and Rostislav Pospíšil representing the fine art and theatre sphere and the technical support was provided by the drugstore manager Drahomír Svatoň. The exhibitions were closely related to other unofficial or partly official activities of the Brno circle. The British Foundation of Jan Hus donated necessary technical equipment to the so called „underground university“ and it also influenced the form of gallery openings. In a nearby restaurant called Prague there used to be after every opening a projection of the exhibiting artist’s profile filmed in his studio. The videos were mostly made by Aleš Záboj, some of them were also made by Milan Maryška, Michal Hýbek, Pavel Jandourek or Petr Macků.

Special thanks to Aleš Záboj for providing the video to the VVP AVU archive.

In the Window to the Archive programme the AVU Research Center in Prague (VVP AVU) in cooperation with Artyčok.tv regularly release works from the VVP AVU video archive. The selection for Artyčok.tv focuses on older works (materials from the end of the 20th century), works bordering on video art, film and documentation, or on purely documentary materials related to the recent development of Czech and Slovak visual art.

The final outcome from the workshop was to be a personal documentary from the location. I asked the tractor train driver to move the train in front of my camera. The train offered some amazing views of the museum. And that etude with a dog in the street at the end of the video happened completely by chance. I filmed and edited the video directly in the camera. Via my walkman I added background music that blared over the museum outdoor loudspeakers. A report on the museum park was created that did not feature any actual events, places or real people. No video could match the intensity of the experience though.
