BLIND LOVE

At the beginning there was a title, an indistinct idea about the form of an exhibition and six names. Georgij Bagdasarov is an artist best known from the field of experimental film and music. He lives in Prague where he teaches in the Editing Department of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Pierre Daguin spent a considerable period of time in the Czech Republic in the 1990s, leaving a distinct mark on the local milieu, although it has faded somewhat with the passing of time. Zdeněk Mezihorak currently lives in Berlin where for ten years he has devoted his time exclusively to developing computer games. At the turn of the century his work with video was positioned between a post-conceptual, and a purely expressive approach. Employing drawing, animation and photography, Filip Nerad has for several years been trying to blur the already fuzzy line between visual art and graphic design. Petr Strouhal is a graduate of painting and a self-taught photographer whose approach is ostensibly analytical and detached. He constructs some of his own cameras, and this principle of construction is also significant to what he photographs, and how he does so. Jan Zalio has been developing his lyrical and raw artistic practice on a long-term basis by using diverse media – drawing, objects, a road, photography, video, a tree. I was interested in how this combination could work. I found it somewhat of a mystery and I wanted to find out why. If we view detective story composition as the working methodology of this exhibition, then its title becomes the motive. Behind most crimes there lies motivation, a question to which we seek an answer. In its essence, blind love lacks any reasonable justification. Blind love is a passion, a mitigating circumstance in court, a tragic misunderstanding, or the theme of a film. It certainly isn’t a motive that can be grasped unequivocally, either by the perpetrator, or those in the immediate vicinity. No one will discover exactly what happened at the moment of the crime. The moment when the mind becomes unhinged, a mystery once and for all time. Blind love is an answer without a question.
