“Attitude and Canon” was conceived by Søren Grammel, the curator-inresidence at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts, and the Swedish artist Matts Leiderstam, whose installations develop new perspectives on historical pictorial motifs and compositions. Leiderstam exhibits alongside academy students Alan Cicmak, Eric Kläring, Lisa Lampl, and Lisa Rastl. All the works were made with a view towards creating linkages to two of the academy’s exhibitions: its painting exhibit and its collection of engravings. The aim of this “complementary” exhibition – installed in among the painting collection – is to create vectors of contemporaneity to the neighboring exhibition of engravings. This approach makes us think about the place and practice of collecting as well as the choreography of exhibitions and the grammar of art-historical decisionmaking
