HOW MIAO

“How Miao, or Women and Girl,” takes place at the VT Artsalon in Taipei. As the title suggests, this group show presents the work of seven female artists, all of whom address gender issues within their work. The pieces range from painting, video, and sculpture to installation.

Two notable pieces are Shan Kai-Ti’s “Let’s Freeze It, Part One” – a wellexecuted self-portrait of the artist squeezed onto the bottom shelf of a supermarket freezer – and Lu Wei- Chun’s “Hiking.” Wei-Chun’s vision of futility shows a group of formally dressed people struggling against the buoyancy of the water while trying to walk along the bottom of a swimming pool.

Other themes within this varied show include childhood suicide, religion, history, and birth.

HOW MIAO
Bromová is often associated with the transformation of the perception of female identity in the art of the 1990s in Central and Eastern Europe. She is interested in women’s sexualized position in society. In her ritualized performances of recent years, on the other hand, she emphasizes the archetypal healing power of femininity, fertility, relationships, and collectivity.
How do bodies queer at the molecular level? How is this queering inextricably tied to industrial capitalism? And is there a way out of capitalist ruins, one that has been further exacerbated by the pandemic?
