Školská 28

The courtyard of the house „U rytířů“ near Václavské náměstí was used until the 1990’s as an industrial space of a metallurgic plant. For 16 years now it has been functioning as the Communication space Školská 28, named after the eponymous address. This exhibitory and educational space in the center of Prague started off as a center for leisure activities and now, thanks to its diverse programme, presents a synergy of the contemporary Czech and foreign visual arts, music, authorial film production and video art.
If you find yourself in the space of Školská, it is as if you were in a specific world, similar to any other alternative European space. However, the programme offers a broad spectrum of cultural self-realization to only to the younger generation and the middle-aged, but also to children and senior citizens, thanks to its workshops. An important aspect of Školská is the diverse dramaturgy of the programme.
The team of the Školská space thus, through the rich dramaturgy of evening programmes, exhibitions, thematic blocs, or creative workshops, aims not only to slavishly copy trends of the contemporary art, but it rather presents challenges and invitations to play and experimentation with hitherto unestablished artistic forms.
In the field of visual arts, the pace is set by an expert committee, in the past years consisting of leading Czech artists and theoreticians (last year, for instance, it included the young theoretician Blanka Švédová, or artists Michal Kindernay and Pavel Mrkus).
Since the year 2011, in parallel with exhibition projects in the main gallery, Veronika Resslová presents microprojects under the title “Bílý nástěnka” in the corridor leasing to the courtyard, and The Hole Gallery (2012), founded on the motivation to expand the exhibitory space of the Školská 28 gallery by adding a space for artist working in the realm of sound, radio, experimental music and field sound recordings.
The music dramaturgy, led by Petr Vrba, through regular concerts combines visual arts with music and presents here distinguished personalities of the Czech and foreign sonic art.
Školská 28 has in recent years been involved in long-term international artistic projects, in which, through co-operation, exchange, and research, it strives to interconnect with activities of European scope.

Školská 28
For a long time, I didn't know what to write about this exhibition. It has no theme, the exhibiting artists have nothing in common, and their selection is purely subjective—I selfishly decided based solely on which paintings I personally found remarkable. It was only yesterday in my studio that one of the artists told me about a curator who reproached her for not providing any key to her paintings.
