Hungarian architectural historian and pedagogue Ákos Moravánszky speak at the lecture entitled Flows of ideas, flows of matter, together with the prominent Swiss architect and theorist Andre Deplazes, co-founder of Bearth & Deplazes Architekten. It outlines the transformation of ideas and forms in architecture.
Ákos Moravánszky
Hungarian architect, architectural historian and titular professor of architectural theory at the ETH Zurich. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Budapest and art history and conservation at the Technical University of Vienna. He is interested in the history of architecture of Eastern and Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. He is engaged in research and publishing activities. Among other things, he was the editor-in-chief of the Hungarian Union of Architects “Magyar Épitömüvészet”, a researcher at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich, and a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Massachusetts). He has published in the Swiss architectural magazine Werk, Bauen + Wohnen and serves on the editorial board of tec21.
Andrea Deplazes
The award-winning architect Andrea Deplazes, professor of architecture and construction at ETH Zurich, is among other things the author of the recognized “bible” of architects on building construction – Architektur konstruieren. Vom Rohmaterial zum Bauwerk. Ein Handbuch. He received his degree in 1988 from the ETH in Zurich and in the same year founded his own architecture studio Bearth & Deplazes together with Valentin Bearth. For Deplazes, architecture is an interweaving of plan and practice. According to him, it should be freed from dogmas and individual handwriting, he understands it as a series of possibilities and challenges. Together with his students, he designed the Monte Rosa chalet in the Swiss Alps – a unique center of technological innovation and a shelter for climbers in one. The structure nicknamed the mountain crystal is located at an altitude of 2883 meters. It is not accessible by car or cable car, so only the most dedicated fans of contemporary architecture will see it. Deplazes is also known for his non-traditional designs of houses made of various materials, from wooden constructions to concrete new constructions. He accepted the invitation from Kruh in 2014 and had a lecture together with his colleague Joseph Schwartz.
