Profiles

Ivan Palacký

When I was choosing musicians whose profiles shouldn’t be missing at Artyčok.tv I placed emphasis on continuity, untriteness, self-will in beating path, so called „international exchange“ and effect. Ivan Palacký plays the amplified knitting machine Dopleta and he is the most successful Czech representative (in the Czech Republic also an inovator) of a new non-idiomatic approach to an improvised music which started off at the turn of the Millenium for example in Berlin, Vienna and Tokio. He cooperated with many international elites of the genre, in past he composed remarkable songs for a music group Sledě, živé sledě (Herrings, Live Herrings).

The camera on a tripod recorded women, men and children coming up on an escalator from the subway at Wenceslas Square from the then still non-existent underground station Můstek. Their faces reflect everyday commonness and their passive bodies are brought up to the surface in a continual stream on an escalator. Through those people Ságl showed the resignation of Czech society during the normalization period.
