MIROSLAW BALKA - WE SEE YOU

Miroslaw Balka presents the sitespecific project “223 × 4127 × 950” at Karlsruhe’s Staatliche Kunsthalle. The project’s strong political statement compares the past political situation in Poland with the Western context.

In addition, his intervention involving 92 original Renaissance paintings by old German masters looks at the possibilities of seeing and perceiving classical art. Miroslaw Balka (b. 1958) is one of the most notable Eastern European artists today. He has exhibited at numerous eminent venues, including a 2009 solo show at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall (“How It Is”). Balka lives and works in Warsaw and Otwock.

MIROSLAW BALKA - WE SEE YOU
The works on display were created between 2003 and 2008. I made them all during my stay in the Czech Republic. I didn't paint much in India at the time, I was just experimenting. I mostly created works on paper as tests of what I would paint on canvas. However, it often happens that the papers turn out better than the canvases. I find papers more suitable for this type of work because of their delicacy. But it is difficult to exhibit them, as they require special frames and must be placed under glass, which causes a lot of trouble. That is why I have never exhibited larger papers.
