Slovak painter František Demeter is interested in the possibilities and limits of hanging paintings, of painting as such. At the exhibition in the SPZ gallery, he deconstructs his large-scale painting installation entitled "Canvas on an Easel" (2014) and responds directly to the gallery space. Is painting flat? Is painting static? Is painting canvas? How does painting function in space and what frames it? Provocative questions without clear answers lead Demeter to further steps in dealing with the problems of painting and the image. For Demeter, painting is a process of layering, adding, and removing material. Viewers become actors in his installation.

In our jargon, the somatic exhibition was called svät. Svät took place at the turning point of time and space, embedded in and at the same time separated from the world ruled by time, space, meaning, and significance. Entering the exhibition was a ritualized transition between the world and the svät, between two different dimensions of the same reality. Pilgrims were torn from their everyday lives and thrown into a sacred space-time, where their derailed minds were exposed to events that were unheard of outside.
