When Guests Become Host

Three collectives have been invited to use Culturgest gallery as a base, to propose and realize projects in the city of Porto: the architect collective Supersudaca (Latin America), the art collectives Freee (United Kingdom) and WochenKlausur (Austria). „When guests become host“ is an ongoing research project looking into artistic strategies for „finding hospitality“ in the public domain and is curated by Danielle van Zuijlen. The report describes the curatorial approach and goes into the details of the WochenKlausur project.

When Guests Become Host
Kader Attia deals with colonial and post-colonial history and sensitively unfolds the complicated and “imbalanced” relationships between the Western and non-Western world and their mutual cultural, political, social, and technological exchange. One of his interests is architecture and the setting it creates with its spatial and political dimension. Using modern architecture as a critical example of an – often – malfunctioning living environment is an occurring subject of Attia’s work.
