Jan Ságl – Scenes from Underground: Films of 1971-74

The exhibition presents the newly restored film works of one of the foremost Czech photographers, Jan Ságl. The author of the iconic images of The Plastic People of the Universe and The Primitives Group had also filmed twelve short films in the early 70s. There, he documents life of the Underground community and, in a few purely artistic works, makes recourse to the tradition of 60s film experimentation. These works will be presented along with a selection of scenographic pieces which he fashioned along with his wife Zorka in the late 60s and early 70s for the purposes of Underground concert happenings.

Jan Ságl – Scenes from Underground: Films of 1971-74
Our films can be divided in two categories: art films (following an idea, an experiment) and documents (everyday life in the school: fights among classmates, teachers). Movies  called “I.R. Piktuers” (I. = Ivars, R. = Rinalds, Piktuers = twisted word “pictures” were mostly made between 1992-1993 at the elementary school in Riga.
