Interviews about sound 12 - Tomáš Vaněk

Tomáš Vaněk belongs to the generation of artists who appeared on the Czech art scene in the mid-1990s. His work may be characterised as exploring the space „inbetween“ – between reality and fiction, between the artist and the viewer, between a creative and routine approach, between private and public, between perception and conscience – or, finally, between an object and its shadow. Tomáš Vaněk was awarded the Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2001.

In the series of thirteen audio-interviews recorded during the autumn 2013 Johana Švarcová spoke to artists who use in different ways „the non-visual element“ – sound. For some of the artists that she addressed, working with sound, sound art, development of instruments (hardware and software), radio art or sound installations have become their major field of interest. Other artists deal with sound or sound track (e.g. video) in their own specific ways.

Interviews about sound 12 - Tomáš Vaněk
The structure of the Tamagotchi video is based on the alternation of simple animations and texts. The animations remind us of early video games or simple computer games. For the texts he used the Chicago typeface which was designed for Apple Computer and was used between 1984 and 1997 in the operating system user interface. Unlike the main stream of Czech video making in the mid- 1990s, mostly based on performative elements or artistic unusualness, Mašín´s approach is radically different not only in terms of aesthetics but also conception.
