New Slovakia (hard) birth of modern life style 1918–1949

 

The exhibition presents in short breaking modern civilization into life of Slovakian society after the coup d’état. It shows how modern art in Slovakia reflected “achievements” of modern civilization and how it together created overall visual of the time. There are presented not only traditional art techniques such as painting, drawing, plastic art but the accent is particularly put on a photographic material and artefacts of applied art. It presents photographic sets of Jaromír Funke, Miloš Dohány, Karel Plicka together with top avant garde works of Ľudovít Fulla, Mikuláš Galanda and applied art as well.

Burning hair might not be available on the scale of instant scents yet. They bring critical unease into the reading of Lenka’s and Tania’s environment. Just as the camera work in a strangely voyeuristic video in which the loudest emotion besides breaking into the private zone is hopelessness. The authors gave up direct control over the camera shots and gave it to a vacuum cleaner that moves through the space on its own and cleans up.
