The main motivation of the project is to deconstruct economic rhetoric, developing a method that combines structural analysis with creative writing. Papadopoulos’ intention is to use economic text as material, focusing on the formal qualities of economic discourse, its communicative, persuasive, and moralizing structures. Following Stéphane Mallarmé, his reading of economics will be an act of decoding by actualizing and materializing the symbols, be it letters, words, numbers, mathematical equations or diagrams. Decoding is going to be followed, naturally, by a re-coding of economic narratives through poetry and fiction. The project falls in the intersection of artistic research and artistic critique, trying to develop an alternative to the economic orthodoxy from within the very discourse of ‘scientific’ economics.
Georgios Papadopouloscombines economics and philosophy with an exploratory artistic practice. His work gravitates around money and its socioeconomic functions. In 2012 he won the Vilém Flusser Award for Artistic Research by the transmediale festival and the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. He has presented his work at the ICA in London, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, MuseumsQuartier Q21 in Vienna, and the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Papadopoulos currently works at the Research Institute for Arts and Technology in Vienna (RIAT).
